Walter A. Montgomery (1845-1921) was a lawyer, Confederate soldier, and North Carolina Supreme Court justice, of Warrenton, N.C., and Raleigh, N.C. The collection contains writings of Montgomery, including typed drafts and supplementary notes for an unpublished political history of the Confederacy and for Montgomery's memoirs of his life after the Civil War, and an annotated typescript of his autobiography through 1865 (privately printed in 1939 as The ). Walter Alexander Montgomery (1845-1921) was born in Warrenton, N.C., and served in the Confederate Army, 1861-1865. He practiced law in Warrenton until 1893 except for a brief period, 1872-1875, in Memphis, Tenn. He moved to Raleigh, N.C., in 1893, was Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of North Carolina, 1894-1904, and resumed the practice of law in Raleigh until his death.
